RY DAVID BRADLEY
6-29 SEPTEMBER 2018
Gallery 9 is proud to present a new series of tapestries by Australian artist Ry David Bradley. In this solo exhibition, Bradley emphasises his process, positioning painting as a partnership between the artist and technology. Drawing inspiration from Robert Rauschenberg’s iconic Currents series, the works take their imagery from international and local news cycles, which are subsequently rendered as paintings, by the artist’s digital brushstrokes. These strokes create a visual effect that mimics artificial intelligence recognition software – heavily distorting and fracturing the images to the point of abstraction.
In Click, Bradley’s use of artificial intelligence as a creative partner anticipates the ever- increasing pervasiveness of such technology. The logos of fictitious companies, which appear in Gallery 9, are the product of this partnership; they were imagined after the artist tasked A.I. technology to create new art movements and terminology. Pairing tangible and intangible technologies together, Bradley draws a temporal line that links the Jacquard loom with the computer, and punched cards with complex tapestry sequences. These hypnotic works are a site where 21st century painting and the tradition of weaving both collide and cohere.
Ry David Bradley (b. 1979) lives and works between London and New York. He holds a Masters of Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne.
