Peter Alwast’s practice employs a range of media including video, computer graphics, painting and drawing. Through the process of translation, his video works and drawings fold together different layers of representation, interchanging between real and virtual constructions of space. The varying approaches to media probe the way space (both real and virtual) constructs ideas about subjectivity and memory. The constructed spaces within Alwast’s works are inflected with politics, by using appropriated images imbued with various kinds of utopian and romantic aspirations; exploding fireworks next to suburban developments as in (Relics, 2008), a romantic landscape scene with a rising moon over an apartment block as in (Things Were Really Good for Us Then, 2011) or two characters continually walking towards each other but never quite meeting in a happy ending (Future Perfect, 2011)

In 1999, Peter Alwast was awarded a Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship and since completing his Masters in Fine Art from the Parsons School of Design in New York in 2001, he has exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2008 he was the inaugural recipient of The Premier of Queensland New Media Art Award, hosted by The Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia.

Peter Alwast’s first solo show at Gallery 9 was in October 2011. In the same year he created a solo exhibition at the IMA, Brisbane (Future Perfect) and his work will also be seen in the group exhibition Experimenta Utopia Now travelling to MONA, Tasmania as well as Selectively Revealed at the Aram Art Gallery, Seoul, South Korea. In 2011, Alwast’s drawing, Trees, Waterfall Back, won the Jacaranda Aquisitive Drawing Award at Grafton Regional Gallery and he had an artist studio residency at Artspace, Sydney.
