Paul Williams

Williams’ dynamic landscape paintings are intense and vivid. His subjects share much with the rich traditions of Australian landscape painting but his own visions of the land are projections of his dreamscapes; imagined and abstracted versions of natural forms. The painted subjects are imagined places which Williams executes with energetic gestural marks. Each mark is expressive yet controlled and together they convey the artist’s fondness and familiarity towards each scene as he invents and discovers it.

Originally from Western Australia, Paul Williams’ artistic background was also previously shared with a career in music, as a long-term member of Melbourne band Panel of Judges. Williams holds a BFA from Curtain University and an MVA from The Victorian College of the Arts. He has held exhibitions with Neo Space (2014), Utopian Slumps (2013), Gallery 9 (2012), Seventh Gallery (2011), Mr Kitly (2012) and at the Substation (2012). During his time at The VCA he was recipient of the Alan Gordon McMillan Arts Award, the Rosemary Ricker Award and the Tania Brougham Award.  He has also been a finalist in the Keith and Elizabeth Murdoch Travelling Art Fellowship Exhibition at The Victorian College of the Arts (2009) and The Brett Whitely Travelling Art Scholarship Finalists Exhibitions (1999 and 2002). His work is held in the Macquarie Group and the RACV collections and by collectors around Australia, in the USA and in Canada.
